Black Eyewear

Black Eyewear frames and sunglasses are designed by Robert Roope and inspired by 1940s, 50s and 60s African and American jazz.

It was important that we created an identity that not only encompassed the spirit of the era, but also enabled Black Eyewear to exist as a contemporary brand.

We were inspired by the typography of the Blue Note and ECM record sleeves, but conscious that we didn’t want to create yet another pastiche of this period. So we introduced a simple graphic device – two dots that sit within the logo (and also stand alone as the marque), inspired by the exposed ends of the arm hinges on many of the old frames. This coupled with a stripped back colour palette of black and white ensures that the identity is more now than then.
